United Nations Security Council – Regulation and Prevention of Conflicts Involving Nuclear Weapons
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the principal organs of the UN, bearing the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. In this committee, delegates will address one of the most pressing challenges of the modern world: the regulation and prevention of conflicts involving nuclear weapons. The existence of such weapons represents not only a threat to global stability but also a humanitarian risk of unprecedented magnitude.
The committee will focus on two interconnected topics:
Topic A explores the strengthening of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a cornerstone of nuclear governance, with discussions centered on balancing the three pillars of the treaty: non-proliferation, disarmament, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Delegates will be encouraged to consider innovative ways of reinforcing compliance and building trust between nuclear and non-nuclear states.
Topic B addresses the collapse of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and its implications for nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, a region marked by long-standing rivalries and security concerns. Here, delegates must navigate complex geopolitical realities while seeking viable diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation. By simulating the UNSC, participants will engage in dynamic debates, diplomatic negotiations, and the drafting of resolutions that mirror real-world challenges. The goal is to foster critical thinking, multilateral dialogue, and cooperation, empowering delegates to explore the balance between national interests and collective security. Ultimately, this committee offers an opportunity to reflect on how the international community can advance towards a safer, more stable, and cooperative world, free from the existential risks posed by nuclear weapons.
